The Brutal Gamer time machine gets dusted off for another trip into gaming history.
Ah, taxis. Not the most fun method of transport, admittedly. Cabbies telling you about stuff that’s happened to them, taking unnecessarily long routes just to bump a quid or two on the fare, telling you how they ‘don’t go south of the river at this time of night’. Good times. In all seriousness, though, back in 1999, Sega published a title that made taxis a hell of a lot of fun, Crazy Taxi. Crazy Taxi was developed by Hitmaker, who were both previously and subsequently known as Sega AM-3. It started life, as several Sega games did, in the arcades, and it was also released for the Dreamcast, Gamecube, PS2 and PC over the next few times. |

This is essentially a score attack game. There were four playable characters to choose from, each with their own taxi and each one handling in different ways, with Axel being the most evenly balanced and B.D. Joe being very quick, but tricky to handle.
The aim of the game is to pick up and drop off as many passengers as you can before the time limit runs out. You got a rating depending on how quickly and smoothly you manage to get your passenger to their destination, with a bonus to match. If you don’t get the passenger to their destination before their time limit runs out, they jump out of the taxi and you get nothing. Once your overall time limit has run out, you get a final score and a license rating at the end. |
In addition to this mode, the console versions came with a mode known as ‘Crazy Box’. This was a series of mini-games that involved you doing thing such as bowling using your taxi as a ball and completing a certain number of fares within a set time limit. These were a fun little distraction from the main game.
Crazy Taxi games are still being made to this day, with the 5th Crazy Taxi game, ‘Fare Wars’, being released just a couple of years ago on the PSP, which was basically a combination of Crazy Taxi 1 and 2, with the added bonus of multiplier. All in all, the original Crazy Taxi was great fun, and a great way to kill some time. Certainly not the sort of game you’d spend hours upon hours playing, due to the limited scope, and certainly not the greatest game ever made. But I remember if fondly for being an absolute blast. |
